While taking my daughter to a friend's birthday party, we were traveling at a speed of ~50 miles per hour when the transmission downshifted from 5th or 6th gear directly to first gear for no reason. The back tires locked up when the RPMs drastically increased, and the truck went into a skid. I believe my limited experience working on cars gave me the instinct to throw the shifter into neutral wh
... ile applying the brakes. I was able to gain control of the vehicle prior to it fully going off into the ditch. After researching the issue, it became apparent this was a common problem with the 6R80 transmission that Ford knows about. I read numerous stories of the safety issues owners have had with this 6R80 transmission in the 12th gen F150. I brought the truck to my dealer, and they confirmed it was from the "LEAD frame" that Ford provided an extended warranty on. I was told the warranty didn't cover my vehicle (10 year/150K mile). This vehicle was purchased from the Ford dealership new in 2013 and has been in the family ever since. It currently only has 65K miles on it and has never had any work done to the transmission expect for a program flash at 26K miles in an attempt to prevent this exact issue. Outside of being disappointed that Ford was not willing to help with the expensive repair, my mind went to the safety aspect of what's going on. I believe Ford made the decision to not classify this as a safety recall to prevent paying for the replacement of the plastic LEAD Frame on all 6R80 transmissions. While I understand this is costly to an auto manufacturer, I can't help but think of what the result of this safety issue would have been if my wife or an unexperienced driver was under control of this vehicle that day. I reached out to the Ford Customer Service rep and explained my safety concerns. I was told she would file it under safety and that I may or may not get a call. This confirms their lack of concern; hence I'm reaching out to the NHTSA.Read more

The Jeep has a drivetrain defect involving the transmission and power transfer unit (PTU) that has existed since purchase and has progressively worsened over the years. From early on, the vehicle intermittently hesitated when accelerating from a complete stop, followed by sudden surging or lunging forward. Symptoms were reported to a Jeep dealership early after purchase while under warranty. Their
... inspections did not identify a defect at that time. Over time, the condition worsened and became more frequent, including hesitation on takeoff, bucking, and abnormal behavior when maneuvering at low speeds or turning the steering wheel to full lock in parking lot. This occurs unpredictably and creates a dangerous situation when entering intersections, making left turns across traffic, or merging, because the vehicle does not accelerate when expected and then suddenly surges. The Jeep was taken to an independent mechanic. After inspection and a test drive, the mechanic stated the condition was unsafe and suspected a transfer case issue, recommending that the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealership for further evaluation. After this referral, the Jeep dealership was able to reproduce the problem during a test drive and confirmed hesitation on acceleration, transmission shift issues, and PTU malfunction. The dealership documented that the transmission and PTU require replacement. The vehicle had previously received the manufacturer’s required powertrain recall software update. The dealership stated they could attempt another software relearn or update, but no guarantee it would resolve the issue. No warning lights or dashboard messages prior to or during these events. MOPAR says that the PTU is on national backorder with no ETA. The cost of repair exceeds the value of the vehicle and would be entirely out-of-pocket since the warranty is up, making repair financially impossible. As a result, the owner is left with an unsafe vehicle that cannot be reasonably repaired.Read more

After lifting off the gas pedal, it jolted forward, triggered a “Reduced Performance” dashboard warning, and remained in what felt like second gear, refusing to shift. I had the Yukon inspected at a GMC dealership, where a technician confirmed the issue originated from a faulty transmission valve body. My independent research has revealed this to be a widespread defect in the 2021 Yukon XL, prompting GM to issue Special CoverageXXX, which explicitly covers valve-body replacements for 2021 Yukon XLs experiencing reduced performance. Despite meeting these criteria and receiving identical diagnostic alerts, I was informed that my VIN is not covered. The same underlying problem was subject to a safety recall for the 2017-2018 model years, but the defect was not included for my 2019 model year even though it's the same 1.5L Turbo motor and there are numerous complaints from customers on the same exact issue. I was quoted over $2300 since it was past the warranty period (8k miles past the extended 7/70k emissions warranty that would have covered this 100%). Not only is this premature failure of critical engine component making the engine run very rough with a sudden and severe loss of powers, it produces a safety hazard of a direct rear-end crash risk due to the inability to maintain a safe operating speed. This is a significant expense for a defect Honda is already aware of. Will not shift into park. Code is P068A on reader. When it started not going into park, it started shifting really hard between 1st and 2nd gear. When came to a stop, tried to put the vehicle in park and it automatically put the parking brake on. When the shop looked up recalls, they told me Ford had issued a recall that may be related but put a 70,000 mile or 7 year limit on it. My vehicle meets
... the year limit but is over the mileage so Ford said they would not cover it.Read more

While driving on the highway, my 2018 Hyundai Sonata experienced sudden loss of engine power and became undrivable. The failure occurred without warning at approximately 86,500 miles. At the time of the incident, there were two children in the vehicle, and the breakdown occurred at night in cold temperatures (approximately 20°F). An authorized Hyundai dealership later diagnosed zero compression
... in cylinder 3 and confirmed a cracked piston, recommending full engine replacement. The sudden loss of power while driving created a safety risk due to traffic conditions and environmental exposure.Read more

Serpentine belt failure at 70K miles. Was driving back home when I felt the traction misbehaving and the check engine light came on. Was able to get home safely and brought the car to the garage the next open day. During inspection, serpentine belt was found missing 1 rib and was caught in splash fan. Had to pay almost $1000 to replace it as insurance had run out a couple months prior. Volvo tech
... said it was almost surely a defect in the belt as these last typically ~150k miles and they had seen other such recent cases of early failure. I was not happy having to pay to replace a defective part which moreover was about to catastrophically fail, destroying my engine/traction and potentially hurting me. Thankfully the check engine light, which was apparently unrelated (oxygen sensor which needed to be replaced for another $1000) brought me to the garage before the accident happened.Read more

While driving on the freeway utilizing Highway Drive Assist, I suddenly received a warning on the heads up display stating that assisted systems were unavailable, at which point the Adaptive Cruise Control & Lake Keep Assist both deactivated. I pressed the button on the steering wheel to reactive the system and received "conditions not met" error. At this point, I placed my foot on the accelerat
... or and it was completely unresponsive. I stabbed at hte accelerator as well as held it down without issue. Regenerative breaking also did not reactive. Fortunately, I had enough momentum to change lanes safely to the shoulder and power cycle the car. I took the car to my local dealership who did a brief test drive and could not recreate, returning the car to me without contacting Hyundai proper, and recommending I call them directly myself.Read more
