I WAS DRIVING MY YOUNG CHILDREN TO SCHOOL, WHEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION, MY 2002 HONDA ODYSSEY (89,000 MI) LOST POWER. IF WAS AS IF IT SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR, INTO NEUTRAL. AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT SHIFTED BACK. I PRAYED THE REST OF THE WAY TO SCHOOL. AFTER DROPPING THE GIRLS OFF AT SCHOOL, THERE WERE A COUPLE OF OTHER INSTANCES WHERE IT SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR ON THE 2 MILE DRIVE TO THE TR
... ANSMISSION SHOP. PRIOR TO THIS DAY, THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. (WE HAD HAD IT PROPERLY SERVICED ACCORDING TO THE RECOMMENDATIONS - AUG 2010 TRANNY FLUID CHANGED). IN FACT, OUR BAGS WERE PACKED AND WE WERE PLANNING TO LEAVE RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL THAT DAY FOR A 300 MILE TRIP TO GRANDPARENTS. THE TRIP HAD TO BE CANCELLED. WE ARE SO THANKFUL IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY. FROM THE THOUSANDS OF OTHER STORIES I HAVE READ ONLINE, MANY OTHERS WEREN'T SO FORTUNATE. HONDA OFFERED US $450 ON THE $3,300 REPAIR. NOW, WE ARE AWARE OF HOW WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE IS ON THE ODYSSEY. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE HONDA DOES SOMETHING TO PROTECT OWNERS FROM THIS SUDDEN, DANGEROUS FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSIONS? WE BOUGHT A HONDA BECAUSE OF ITS SAFETY RATING. TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REBUILT ONCE, THEN SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED WITH A REMANUFACTURED UNIT FROM GENERAL MOTORS. THIS REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION IS NOW DISPLAYING ANOMALOUS BEHAVIOR. PRIOR TO EACH FAILURE, THE TRANSMISSION EXHIBITED A VARIETY OF INCORRECT BEHAVIOR, INCLUDING RAPID TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH LOCKING AND UNLOCKING, SLIPPING AND REVVING FROM A STOP, WITHOUT THE CAR MOVING, THEN SUDDE

THE MOST RECENT ISSUE HAS BEEN AN OSCILLATION ON 4-3 DOWNSHIFTS AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, AS WELL AS EXCESSIVE TRANSMISSION HEAT BUILD-UP WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER UNLOCKED. THE FIRST TIME THE TRANSMISSION DISPLAYED ODD BEHAVIOR, WHICH WAS TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK AND UNLOCK AT CRUISING SPEEDS, DEALER DROVE THE CAR ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM, AND UPON DISASSEMBLY, FOUND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH MATERIAL IN THE PAN. THEY REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION WITH NEW SOFT PARTS AND REPLACED THE CONVERTER. VEHICLE HAD 59,000 AND THIS WAS ALL PERFORMED UNDER WARRANTY. ABOUT 23,000 MILES LATER, WHEN PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP, THE ENGINE WOULD REV UP MOMENTARILY, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. IT WOULD THEN SLAM INTO GEAR AND MOVE OFF. DEALER CONFIRMED ISSUE, DISASSEMBLED, AND DETERMINED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH HAD AGAIN FAILED. DEALER REPLACED TRANSMISSION WITH A REMANUFACTURED UNIT. THIS WAS ALL DONE UNDER WARRANTY. VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 86000 MILES AT THIS TIME. IMMEDIATELY UPON RECEIVING CAR BACK AFTER REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION, NOTED OSCILLATION ON 4-3 DOWNSHIFTS, AS WELL AS MUCH HIGHER TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURES WITH CONVERTER UNLOCKED (ABOUT 40 DEGREES HIGHER), AS WELL AS EXCESSIVE LOOSENESS OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER. RETURNED TO DEALER, WHO CLAIMED ALL WAS NORMAL. SINCE THAT TIME, WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. I BROUGHT MY 2006 CHEVY EQUINOX IN FOR A OIL CHANGE ON 1/4/11 AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CARRIER BEARING ON THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS COMPLETELY SHOT. I WAS INFORMED TO BRING IT TO A MECHANIC RIGHT AWAY OTHERWISE I WILL LOSE MY DRIVE SHAFT. I BROUGHT MY CAR IMMEDIATELY TO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED FROM GM AND THE PART WAS AROUND $500-$600. I CONTACTED GM BECAUSE IF I WAS DRIVING

I DRIVE MYSELF ALONG WITH A DISABLED DAUGHTER AND 2 YEAR OLD GRANDSON IN THIS CAR AND I HAVE PUT ALL OF US AT RISK EVEN OTHER DRIVERS. APPARENTLY, HONDA/ACURA KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM BUT REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE BOUGHT OUR 2004 MDX NEW. WE HAD ALL NECESSARY MAINTENANCE DONE ON THE VEHICLE. ACURA WANTED OUR DOCUMENTATION WHICH WE PROVIDED. THEY OFFERED TO PAY HALF OF THE REPAIRS. OUR EXPENSE WAS $2000. I FEEL THAT A RECALL IS IN ORDER.
