ACURA SERVICE ADVISED US THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS SLIPPING INTERNALLY AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT (IN WRITING). THE DEALER ADVISED THAT ANTI-FREEZE WAS LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE INTAKE VALVE GASKET WAS BENT. POWER TRAIN LACK OF POWER WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR MAY HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT, PULLING OUT IN TRAFFIC. THIS WAS DUE TO WATER LEAK IN POLLEN FILTER BOX (CRACKED) WHICH AFFECTED THE SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID, AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. 2003 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT MILEAGE OF 121,000 MILES. DEALER SAID THE POLLEN FILTER SEAL WAS NO GOOD AND THAT WATER LEAKED IN AND DESTROYED THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE FLOOR BEHIND THE PASSENGER SEAT. I HAVE READ MANY ACCOUNTS ON THE INTERNET FROM MANY ANGRY OWNERS OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS WHERE LEAKS FROM THIS SEAL HAVE CAUSED CATASTROPHIC REPAIRS. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE VW DEALER TOLD ME THAT CHECKING THE POLLEN FILTER SEAL IS NOT PART OF ANY REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND THAT IN ORDER TO CHECK IT, YOU'D NEED TO DISASSEMBLE QUITE A FEW THINGS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. WHEN I ASKED HIM HOW AN OWNER COULD POSSIBLY KNOW IF THE SEAL NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND HE REPLIED "YOU FOUND OUT HOW". I AM CLEARLY NOT ALONE IN HAVING EXPERIENCED A FAILURE FROM A PART THAT IS NOT IN ANY WAY MAINTAINABLE (THE POLLEN FILTER SEAL) AND THAT HAS CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE CAR. I FEEL THIS IS A CONSUMER ISSUE AND THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE PASSAT THAT VW SHOULD COMPENSATE OWNERS FOR. THERE IS NO WAY FOR AN OWNER TO BE ABLE TO AVOID THIS SITUATION -- IT IS NOT A MATTER OF MAINTENANCE. MY 2010 KIA FORTE EX SEDAN, 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC HAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THAT COULD DEFINITELY LEAD TO INJURIES OR DEATH. THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM THAT CAN HAPPEN ANY TIME, BUT MOSTLY OCCURS DURING OR AFTER GOING UP A SIGNIFICANT HILL, BUT MAY HAPPEN ON LEVEL GROUND. ... CATE THE PROBLEM; THEY SUGGESTED FLUSHING THE TRANSMISSION FOR $150, SO I DID THAT. IT DID NOT HELP. IT STOPPED FOR ABOUT A WEEK, THEN IT STARTED SEIZING UP AGAIN, TODAY (3/10/2011) IT SEIZED TWICE ON MY WIFE. WHAT IT DOES IS NOT ACTUALLY STOP THE CAR, BUT "FREEZE" YOU AT ONE SPEED, TYPICALLY EITHER 20MPH OR 45-50MPH IT TAKES UP TO 30 SECONDS TO SHIFT, AND IF YOU ARE PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC AND IT SEIZES AND WON'T LET YOU GO BEYOND 10-20MPH IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. THE DEALER SAYS THEY WON'T HAVE A REPLACEMENT LOANER UNTIL NEXT WEEK, SO WE'LL WAIT. I'M IN NORTHERN UT. IT'S HAPPENING IN DRY WARM (50-60 DEGREE) WEATHER. WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR SEVERELY, THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT HAPPEN. THE KIA OWNER'S MANUAL SAYS TO INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AT 40,000 AND ONLY CHANGE THEN IF NEEDED, SO THE VERY EXPENSIVE FLUID SHOULD BE GOOD. THIS IS SOME UNIQUE FLUID YOU HAVE TO BUY FROM THE DEALER, NORMAL AUTO PARTS STORES DON'T HAVE IT.
