STARTED EXPERIENCING SHUDDER WHEN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MOVED BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT AT DEALER TO INVESTIGATE AND MINIMIZED DRIVING IN THE MEANTIME. SYMPTOM DID NOT OCCUR OVER TWO DAY PERIOD UNTIL DRIVING ON THIRD DAY WHERE THE ISSUE WORSENED RAPIDLY UNTIL TRANSMISSION BECAME INOPERABLE ABOVE 10 MPH. I INVESTIGATED THE ISSUE AND LEARNED THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE

CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE FLUID WAS DARKEN AND ABOVE THE HIGH-LEVEL MARK FOR THE FLUID LEVEL. I HAD DEALER INVESTIGATE AND THIS IS IN FACT WHAT HAD FAILED. NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 80K MILES SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. MY CAR CURRENTLY HAS 89K MILES AND I AM LOOKING AT A $6000 REPAIR BILL THAT I REFUSE TO REPAIR. NISSAN IS OFFERING ZERO ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH NISSAN PATHFINDERS. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE ISSUE WITH NISSAN AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO ACTIONS OTHER THAN RAISING THE WARRANTY TO 80K MILES. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 DAYS LATER. I TOOK IT TO AUTOZONE AND HAD THEM PLUG IT IN TO GET THE CODES OUT OF IT - BEFORE I TURNED IT OFF. I TOOK THE VEHICLE AND THE CODES TO MY MECHANIC. SINCE APRIL 2011 MY 2005 NISSAN PATHFINDER STARTED TO RATTLING AND VIBRATION UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS, WHERE THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE INPUT SHAFT BEARING FAILED AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE OVERHAULED. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, MY 2008 FORD TAURUS SEL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DROPPED OUT OF GEAR WHILE I WAS ACCELERATING SLOWLY AWAY FROM A STOP AND THEN SLAMMED INTO GEAR. THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED I WAS LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY. IT DROPPED OUT OF GEAR AT ABOUT 5 MPH AND MADE A GROWLING NOISE. ... TRANSMISSION SLAMMED INTO FIRST. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, SO I JUST SHIFTED IT INTO NEUTRAL AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. WHEN I STARTED IT AGAIN EVERYTHING WORKED FINE. ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF LATER I HAD A SIMILAR INCIDENT. I WAS LEAVING A PARKING LOT AND I HAD REACHED A SPEED OF 5-15 MPH WHEN THERE WAS NO LONGER ANY GEAR, THEN IT SLAMMED INTO GEAR FOR A MOMENT, WENT A FEW FEET, THEN DROPPED OUT AGAIN, THEN SLAMMED INTO GEAR AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE CURB IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF. FORTUNATELY NO TRAFFIC WAS COMING. I STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND HAD NO FURTHER TROUBLE, BUT THIS TIME I TOOK IT INTO THE FORD DEALER WHERE I HAD BOUGHT IT NEW. THEY CHECKED IT OUT KEEPING IT TWO DAYS BUT SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH EITHER THE TRANSMISSION OR THE SOFTWARE CONTROLLING IT. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO MEMORY ACCESS TO THE TRANSMISSION SO THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND OUT OR VERIFY THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I WAS CHECKING OUT RECALLS AND SERVICE BULLETINS ON IT TODAY AND I FOUND THAT OTHER OWNERS REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I WAS ENTERING ONTO THE FREEWAY ABOUT 60MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED VIBRATING VIOLENTLY. I LEARNED LATER THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE TRANSMISSION OF THIS MODEL CAUSED BY RADIATOR FLUID LEAKING INTO THE TRANSMISSION WHICH CORRODES THE COMPONENTS.
