MY 3 DAY OLD 2010 VW JETTA SPORTWAGEN WITH DSG WAS BEING MOVED IN OUR GARAGE AND IT WON'T ENGAGE IN REVERSE INITIALLY THEN IN ALL GEARS. THE CAR COULD BE LEFT IN GEAR AND NOT MOVE AT ALL. I CALLED THE 24 HOUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THE CAR WAS TOWED THE DAY AFTER TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED IT WITH A MECHATRONICS PROBLEM AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TRANSMISSION STALLING WHILE DRIVING- ACCORDING THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRONIC SHIFT MODULE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND IS ALSO A NOTED PROBLEM IN THESE VEHICLES. THIS SAME VEHICLE HAS ALREADY BEEN RECALLED FOR SIMILAR ISSUE, BUT ONLY FOR THE BIGGER ENGINE SIZE. IT APPEARS TO ME, THAT THERE IS A FLAW IN THE VEHICLE, THAT ALLOWS RUNAWAY ACCELERATION WHEN A MECHANICAL FAILURE OF THIS KIND OCCURS. I CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA ("BRIAN" AT 800-999-1009 X 117738), AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO HIM. HE GOT BACK TO ME TWO DAYS LATER, AND TOLD ME THAT HONDA WAS UNWILLING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE WARRANTS AN INVESTIGATION, AS IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN DEATH OR SEVERE INJURY. THE SAME VEHICLE ALSO HAS DEVELOPED A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO. IT FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS BEGINNING TO FAIL. THERE IS A DELAY BETWEEN GEARS, THAT FEELS LIKE THE TORQUE CONVERTER ISN'T LOCKING UP AS FAST AS IT USED TO. IT MAKES PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC MORE DIFFICULT. DESPITE THERE HAVING BEEN AN ADMITTED TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, WITH 2002 V6 ACCORDS, THE DEALER SUGGESTS THAT I TRY ANOTHER TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE, INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. HONDA HAD ISSUED A CORPORATE RELEASE REGARDING THE RECALL STATING IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN AND AFFECTED 1,000,000 VEHICLES WORLD WIDE. SINCE THEN HONDA HAS IDENTIFIED TWO SOFTWARE UPDATES THAT ARE REQUIRED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AND IF THIS DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM THE TORQUE CONVERTER WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED NEXT. WHAT WE HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD IS THAT IF THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAS BEEN BAD FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IT WILL START PUTTING OUT METAL SHAVINGS THAT WILL GET INTO THE GEARS OF THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION. HOWEVER, HONDA WILL NOT COVER A NEW TRANSMISSION UNLESS IT CAN BE PROVEN THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS DAMAGED, THIS IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DO UNLESS THE TRANSMISSION IS TRULY SHOWING SIGNS OF FAILURE OR ENOUGH OIL SHAVINGS CAN BE FOUND IN THE TRANSMISSION OIL. IT SEEMS THAT THE CONSENSUS IS THAT ODYSSEYS WITH THIS PROBLEM WILL MOST LIKELY HAVE A SHORTEN LIFE SPAN OF THEIR TRANSMISSION. WE HAVE LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON OUR ODYSSEY. MY OPINION IS HONDA IS TRYING PATCH A PROBLEM THAT REQUIRES MAJOR SURGERY WITH BAND AIDS, HOPING THEY CAN GET BEYOND THEIR REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITY UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. THE PERSON FROM TOYOTA EXPLAINED TO ME THE VEHICLE WAS DOING EXACTLY WHAT IT SHOULD BE DOING. ( THE DELAY IN THE TRANSMISSION TO ME SEEMS TO BE ANOTHER TOYOTA PROBLEM THAT THEY DON'T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND IM JUST CRAZY.) I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE THAT DID THIS. INITIAL PROBLEM STARTED 1 MONTH AFTER PURCHASE (NEW), BUT DEALERSHIP MANAGED TO REPLACE SEVERAL OTHER PARTS FIRST AND FINALLY CONSENTED TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION 3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE DATE. 2ND REPLACEMENT WAS EXACTLY 4 YEARS LATER AT 68,000 MILES.
