TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT WAS BACKING OUT OF THE RESIDENCE DRIVEWAY ON A SLIGHT INCLINE. THE DRIVER STEPPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE WHILE THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS PLACED IN THE REVERSE POSITION AND WITHIN THREE SECONDS THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER TOP OF THE DRIVER. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM IN MY 2008 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN. RATHER THAN THE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALLS, MY VAN SOMETIMES DOES NOT RESPOND APPROPRIATELY, EG. THERE IS EXCESSIVE HESITATION AND LACK OF ACCELERATION WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. THERE ARE OTHER TIMES, ESP. GOING DOWNHILL, WHEN THE CAR SEEMS STUCK IN AN UNUSUALLY LOW GEAR (AUTOMATIC TRAN
... SMISSION). WHEN I'VE REPORTED MY CONCERNS TO THE DEALER (EACH TIME IT'S BEEN SERVICED FOR 2 YEARS!), THE SERVICE REP SAYS, "YES, MY AVALON DOES THE SAME THING. IT'S BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL IS NO LONGER MECHANICALLY ATTACHED; INSTEAD IT RELIES ON RADIO WAVES WHICH CAN BE AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY." SO, WHILE THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE AS "DANGEROUS" A PROBLEM AS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATIONS, I CAN IMAGINE A SCENARIO WHEN I WOULD NEED TO ACCELERATE, THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND, AND I COULD BE REAR-ENDED. I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO "REPORT" THIS APPARENT PROBLEM, AS THE TESTIMONY I SAW FROM TOYOTA OFFICIALS SEEMED TO HEAVILY DISCOUNT THE POSSIBILITY OF THERE BEING PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS. ANOTHER ISSUE INVOLVING THE TRANSMISSION OCCURS WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL, THE CLUTCH FAILS TO ENGAGE CAUSING IT TO SLIP WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. AT THIS POINT, THE CAR WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO SHIFT TO 2, 4, OR 6 GEAR MAKING NORMAL CITY/HIGHWAY DRIVING VERY HAZARDOUS. WHEN COMING TO A STOP THE CAR WILL DOWNSHIFT FROM 5TH TO 3RD AND THEN TO 1ST PUTTING TONS OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES INSTEAD OF DECELERATING THE CAR GRADUALLY. THE CAR ACTUALLY HESITATES AT THIS POINT AS IF IT DOES NOT WANT TO STOP. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP THE CAR WILL RED LINE FIRST GEAR AND THEN SHIFT TO 3RD AND REPEAT TO SHIFT TO 5TH GEAR. THIS IS NOT SAFE AT ALL, AS I LOSE THE ABILITY TO MANUALLY SELECT GEARS. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING OCCURRENCE IN MY 2009 MITSUBISHI LANCER RALLIART SINCE DECEMBER OF 2009, AND IT IS NOW MARCH 1, 2010. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS ISSUE TO THE ATTENTION OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITHOUT ANY HELP OR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS BEING UNDER WARRANTY. I BOUGHT A HONDA BECAUSE OF THE GOOD REPUTATION, BUT A TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 89K MILES IS RIDICULOUS. THE TOWN I LIVE IN HAS APPROX 6,000 PEOPLE, AND ALREADY 4 INCIDENTS OF THE EXACT SAME ISSUE HAVE OCCURRED. THE FRONT WHEELS JUMPED THE TALL CURB AND PUSHED DOWN ONE OF THE PARTS OF THE TREE, THEN WAS STOPPED IN PLACE BY THE HEAVY GRILL OF THE VOLVO SEDAN. I EXITED THE CAR BEFORE IT JUMPED THE CURB, THEN GOT BACK IN WHEN IT WAS BLOCKED BY THE VOLVO, AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. AT THAT POINT THE CAR STOPPED AND THE WHEELS STOPPED SPINNING. IT WAS AN EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND FURTHER DAMAGE WAS CONTAINED ONLY BECAUSE OF THE OBJECT IN FRONT OF THE CAR. NO ONE WAS INJURED, AND THE ONLY DAMAGE WAS TO THE CAR FRONT AND THE LANDSCAPING. I SOLD THE CAR, SOON AFTER, BUT DID TELL THE BUYER ABOUT THE INCIDENT.
