I HAVE A 2002 BMW 530I WITH AUTO TRANSMISSION. TRANNY MODEL 5HP19. AT AROUND 85,000, SOMETIME IN MID-JULY 2006, I BEGAN TO HAVE AN INTERMITTENT (ON FOR MAYBE 300-500 MILES, THEN OFF FOR AROUND 7000 TO 10000 MILES) CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE CEL CODE WAS ALWAYS DIAGNOSED AS P0741 - "TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE OR STUCK OFF." SINCE 120,000 MILES, THE SAME CODE IS MUCH MORE FREQUENT,
... MAYBE 600-800 MILES BETWEEN TURNING ON-OFF. I HAVE CONTACTED MY BMW DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS SINCE THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED AT AROUND 85,000 MILES, AND A FEW TIMES AFTER SINCE. THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REBUILT AY MY COST, ALTHOUGH THIS IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE AND THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS. AFTER TALKING TO OTHER BMW OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, AND GETTING A COPY OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN, IT WOULD SEEM THAT THIS IS A COMMONLY KNOWN AND RECURRING PROBLEM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED. I BELIEVE THAT BMW SHOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM AT THEIR COST, EVEN IF THE VEHICLE IS OF HIGH MILEAGE (AS MINE HAS 160,000 MILES NOW.) THE SERVICE BULLETIN SAYS THE PROBLEM IS A BAD TORQUE CONVERTER SEAL. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED BECAUSE IT WAS NO LONGER OPERABLE AND WAS CAUSING A ROAD HAZARD FOR OTHER VEHICLES. THE DEALER CLAIMED SNOW CAUSED THE SHIFTING CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE GEAR SELECTOR. THE DEALER, HOLLY KIA, REPORTED THE PROBLEM WAS REPAIRED BY REATTACHING THE CABLE TO THE SELECTOR. MORE RECENTLY MY SON WAS OPERATING MY VEHICLE ON OR ABOUT JULY 6TH, 2010 ' A 100+ DEGREE DAY. HE REPORTED THAT HE WAS IN REVERSE TO MOVE THE CAR TO ANOTHER PARKING SPOT IN A CAR DEALERSHIP AND THE CAR COULD NO LONGER BE SHIFTED INTO ANY GEAR' AGAIN. DURING THIS INSTANCE THE CAR WAS ON A STEEP INCLINE AND MY SON WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR AROUND OTHER PARKED CARS BUT THE CAR HAD TO BE COASTED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE GRADE IN ORDER TO BE SAFELY PARKED. AFTER THE SECOND INSTANCE, THE CAR WAS AGAIN TOWED BACK TO HOLLY KIA FOR REPAIR - HOLLY KIA IS NOW REPLACING THE SHIFTING CABLE. THE HOLLY KIA SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMS THIS PROBLEM WITH THE 2007 KIA OPTIMA AS A MANUFACTURING FLAW. TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 1997 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE UNLESS THE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WAS IN PARK. PURCHASED 2010 VW PASSAT WITH 69 MILES ON 6/14/2010 IMMEDIATELY NOTICED VEHICLE SHUDDERED IN REVERSE AFTER STARTING. ON 6/27/2010 AFTER DRIVING APPROX. 4 BLOCKS WHILE ON AN INCLINE THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED. THE RPMS AND THE ENGINE WAS REVVING UP AND THE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD GO NO WHERE IN ADDITION NO GEAR WAS INDICATED ON THE CONTROL DISPLAY. CHANGING GEARS DIDN'T HELP
... . AFTER REPEATEDLY RESTARTING THE VEHICLE I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO DISPLAY A GEAR AND MOVE. THE SAME SITUATION OCCURRED AGAIN LATER THAT SAME EVENING ALMOST UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS. AT THIS POINT THE VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 150 MILES. I PLACED THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICE THE NEXT DAY. THE SERVICE TECH INDICATED THAT VW WAS AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLLED THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT I SHOULD BE GETTING A NOTICE ABOUT A RECALL AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE UP TO TWO WEEKS TO GET THE PART. MY VEHICLE WAS SCHEDULED TO BE IN THE SHOP FOR AFTER MARKET DETAILING FOR TWO DAYS ANYWAY. ON 6/29/2010 I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE WAS READY THAT THE TECH'S HAD DRIVEN THE CAR AROUND THE PARKING LOT AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO JUST LEARN THE TRANSMISSION. ON 6/30/2010 I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO PA. ON 7/1/2010 I EXPERIENCED THE SAME MECHANICAL PROBLEM. AFTER DRIVING APPROX 1/4 - 1/2 MILE I SLOWED DOWN TO TURN INTO A FASTFOOD ESTABLISHMENT. AFTER TURNING IN ABOUT A CAR'S LENGTH THE VEHICLE STOPPED AND WOULD NOT MOVE. I IMMEDIATELY PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND TRIED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AND CALM DOWN THE IRATE DRIVER BEHIND ME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALER SPOKE WITH VW REPEATEDLY AND WAS TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE CONDITION REPEATED. I AM BEING TOLD A CODE RELATING TO THE TRANSMISSION WAS DETECTED. THAT IT WAS CLEARED AND TEST DROVE AND THAT THERE SEEMS TO BE NO PROBLEM. THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO RELEARN THE TRANSMISSION. WHILE I AM DRIVING THE TRUCK SLOWS DOWN THEN SPEEDS BACK UP. VEHICLE IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD AND HAS 71,000 MILES, A FEW DAYS AGO THE O/D LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND THEN A DAY LATER THE CHECK ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON AS WELL.
