FORD KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANSMISSION AND DISCONTINUED USING IT IN LATER MODEL FREESTYLES. I THINK FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR SELLING A VEHICLE WITH DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION AND THROTTLE BODY. MY PACIFICA JUST STOPPED RUNNING WHILE I WAS ON A BUSY INTERSECTION IN MY CITY. I LOST ALL POWER BRAKES, STEERING, AND POWER. I HAD MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. NOT TO MENTION THAT I HAVE TOO MANY MILES FOR THE WARRANTY. ALSO THAT I AM THE SECOND OWNER, (I AM ACTUALLY THE FIRST OWNER, THE CAR WAS A PROGRAM VEHICLE THAT WAS DRIVEN BY AN EXECUTIVE OF CHRYSLER). I ASKED WHY MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED, BECAUSE THIS WAS THE ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE, SHE STATED THAT THERE WERE MORE COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME THING (VEHICLES WITH PCM REPLACEMENT, NOT ON THE RECALL) WITHIN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, AND IF ANYTHING TRANSPIRED, THAT THEY WOULD LET ME KNOW BY MAIL. THIS IS NOT A MAINTENANCE ISSUE, BUT A SAFETY ISSUE, THAT I HAD NO WARNING OR SIGNS OF BEFORE IT HAPPENED. I AM VERY CONCERNED OVER THIS. I PURCHASED MY 2001 ACURA MDX NEW. I HAVE BEEN THE ONLY DRIVER. AROUND 115,000 MILES I BEGAN TO HEAR THIS GRINDING/GURGLING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I TOOK IT TO THE ACURA DEALER AND DURING THE FIRST VISIT THEY IGNORED THE PROBLEM AND INSTEAD SUGGESTED REPLACING ENGINE MOUNTS. AFTER THAT EXPANSIVE REPAIR I WAS STILL ABLE TO HEAR THE GRINDING NOISE BETWEEN 25-30 MILE SPEEDS.

THIS MEANS THAT THE SAME DESIGN INHERENT TO THE UNIT WAS PLACED BACK IN THE VEHICLE. DOING THIS MEANS THAT HONDA EFFECTIVELY PUT DEFECTIVE MERCHANDISE BACK IN MY CAR. IN NEARLY EVERY CASE I HAVE INVESTIGATED, THE 3RD CLUTCH PACK IS THE FAILURE MODE FOR THE TRANSMISSION. INVESTIGATION TURNED OUT SEVERAL REASONS THIS IS SUCH A COMMON FAILURE. THE THIRD CLUTCH PACK GETS STARVED FOR OIL AND HEAT BUILDUP IS NOT REMOVED FROM THE UNIT DUE TO POOR OIL FLOW. THE PATHS FOR OIL FLOW GET CLOGGED WITH DEBRIS AS THE TRANNY FAILS. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF 2000-2002 HONDA ODYSSEYS LIKE MINE WITH MULTIPLE FAILURES OF THE TRANSMISSION.
