ACCORDING TO ACURA.COM AND THE DEALERSHIP, THIS DEFECT WAS FIXED BY INSTALLING AN 'OIL JET KIT' OR 'OIL COOLER RETURN LINE' TO HELP LUBRICATE THE 2ND GEAR AND KEEP THE TRANSMISSION FROM OVERHEATING. I DO NOT THINK IT WAS FIXED BECAUSE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF MY TRANSMISSION FAILURE. A O-RING CONNECTED TO THE TRANSMISSION STARTED LEAKING OUT TRANSMISSION FLUID AFTER MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR IN THE SNOW, THE BACK TIRES HAD SOME TRACTION PROBLEM DUE TO THE WET SNOW EARLIER. ONCE THE CAR REACHED HOME, TRANSMISSION OIL WAS DRIPPING ONTO THE GARAGE FLOOR. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 25K ON IT, IN MINT CONDITION. THE MERCEDES SHOP INDICATED IT WAS A DEFECT IN THE O-RING DESIGN AND THAT A BETTER REPLACEMENT O-RING WAS INSTALLED FOR A HEFTY PRICE SINCE THE WARRANTY ON THE CAR ENDED THE PRIOR MONTH. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE WEB TO SEE IF THIS PROBLEM WAS COMMON GIVEN IT WAS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE O-RING. TO MY SURPRISE I FOUND THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT MERCEDES BENZ REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. HAD SHE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR SHE COULD HAVE ENDED UP DAMAGING THE TRANSMISSION AND WORSE GOTTEN STRANDED SOMEWHERE. THE INCIDENT COST ME ALMOST $2,000.00 MORE THAN I PLANNED TO SPEND, WHILE ATTENDING MY GRADUATION CEREMONIES IN ARIZONA. CONSIDERING THE EXPENSE TO MAINTAIN A MERCEDES, AS WELL AS THE COST OF THE CAR, YOU WOULD THINK THE SERVICE STAFF WOULD BE MORE PROACTIVE WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE. I SUGGEST MERCEDES CREATE A BETTER WARNING SYSTEM FOR EQUIPMENT FAILURES LIKE THE SEAT CONTROL MODULES AND FUEL PUMP. I ALSO SUGGEST MERCEDES CONSIDER LOWERING THEIR SERVICE PRICES, SO THE AVERAGE "JOANNA" CAN PAY THE MAINTENANCE TO KEEP A DEPENDABLE CAR. WHEN I BOUGHT OUT MY LEASE LAST YEAR I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY CAR (THE ORIGINAL ENDED AT 36000 MILES). IT HAS NOW BEEN FIVE DAYS WITH MANY PHONE CALLS, A RENTAL CAR (ONLY COVERED FIVE DAYS UNDER MY WARRANTY), AND A VISIT FROM A PRIVATE INSPECTOR/ADJUSTER. THE WARRANTY COMPANY IS STILL "REVIEW THE CLAIM" AND HAS NOT YET AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR. WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM THE WARRANTY CO I CAN NOT BEGIN REPAIRS. THEN PARKED CAR, DID ERRAND, RETURNED TO CAR. IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, SHIFTED INTO REVERSE AND THEN INTO DRIVE WITHOUT ISSUE. ONCE DRIVING BACK FROM ERRAND, CAR WAS NOTICEABLY LOUD WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND INTO THIRD. EVENTUALLY CAME TO A STOP LIGHT. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE TO LEAVE THE STOPLIGHT, THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAILED, AND CAR WAS TOWED FOR REPAIR. WE FEEL FORTUNATE THAT OUR YOUNG SON WAS NOT IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE, NOR WAS MY HUSBAND ON THE TOLLROAD. WE FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND A LOCAL, REPUTABLE TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION AND REPLACED THE TORQUE CONVERTER FOR $1500. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A TERRIFIC PRICE ON A REPAIR I WOULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED NEEDING TO DO PRIOR TO 100,000 MILES. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS IN VARIOUS CAR FORUMS, IN PARTICULAR HTTP://TOWNHALL-TALK.EDMUNDS.COM WHERE THERE ARE MORE POSTS ABOUT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS FOR THE NEW BEETLE THAN ANYTHING EXCEPT MAINTENANCE. MY RESEARCH HAS LEARNED THAT THE FIRST GENERATION OF VW'S DOUBLE CLUTCH TRANSMISSIONS HAD A CHRONIC WEAK POINT. THEY COMBINE A WET CLUTCH (AS IN TRADITIONAL AUTOMATIC) AND A GEAR PART (AS IN TRADITIONAL MANUAL TRANSMISSION), HOWEVER BOTH ARE LUBRICATED OUT OF SAME OIL SUMP. THE GEAR PART CAUSES THE OIL TO BE MORE CONTAMINATED WITH WEAR PARTICLES (VS. TRADITIONAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE CONTAMINATED OIL IS USED ALSO IN THE VALVE BODY AND THE WET CLUTCH, AND THESE WEAR PARTICLES CAN DETERIORATE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WET CLUTCH (CLUTCH MATERIAL, RESULTING IN SLIPPAGE, OR CLUTCH AND GEAR CHANGE HYDRAULIC CONTROLS, RESULTING IN DEFECTIVE SHIFT STRATEGIES). ONCE THAT HAPPENS, DAMAGE IS USUALLY IRREVERSIBLE. VW CHANGED THE OIL SERVICE RECOMMENDATION FROM "FILL FOR LIFE" OR 100,000 MILES TO 40,000 MILES. EVEN AT THIS REDUCED AMOUNT, THEY CLEARLY STILL HAD A PROBLEM. THEY PROBABLY MODIFIED THE DESIGN SINCE BUT HAVE NOT ADMITTED IT.
