I WAS MAKING A QUICK TRIP DOWN THE STREET AT AROUND 30MPH WHEN MY GEARS SUDDENLY STARTED SLIPPING, CAUSING MY RPM TO SHOOT DANGEROUSLY HIGH AND MY CAR TO SLOW DOWN. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE THE CAR UNDER 30MPH TO WORK (1.5 MILES AWAY) AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE ONLY WAY I COULD DRIVE SAFELY WAS TO LET OFF OF THE GAS EVERY TIME

2011 MERCEDES BENZ E CLASS-THIS VEHICLE HAS AN ELECTRONIC SHIFTER JUST BEHIND STEERING WHEEL. IT IS DIFFICULT TO TELL IF IT GOES INTO PARK OR NOT. MY WIFE HAD ENGINE RUNNING, GOT OUT OF CAR TO CHECK THE TRUNK AND THOUGHT SHE PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK. IT STARTED TO MOVE AND SHE WAS ABLE TO JUMP INSIDE AND HIT THE BRAKE. LATER THAT MORNING I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPOT AND THOUGHT I HIT THE PARK.

FORTUNATELY, NOBODY WAS BEHIND THE CAR OR SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I SPOKE WITH MERCEDES CORPORATE WHO SAID THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 2006. THE SERVICE FOREMAN AT MY DEALER TOLD ME THERE IS NO WAY TO ADJUST THE COMPUTER SO THAT IF THE CAR ISN'T IN PARK AND THE KEY IS TURNED OFF THE TRANSMISSION WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SENSE NO ONE IN THE DRIVERS SEAT AND THE VEHICLE WOULD LOCK INTO PARK. HE EXPLAINED WITH THE KEY OFF HAD SHE OPENED THE DOOR THE PARK WOULD HAVE AUTOMATICALLY HAPPENED. IT SEEMS THERE IS A SIMPLE FIX. IF THE VEHICLE IS BELOW 5 MPH AND SOMEONE HAS THE ENGINE RUNNING BUT OPENS THE DOOR TO GET OUT IT STILL SHOULD GO INTO PARK. THIS IS A SIMPLE PROGRAM FIX I WOULD GUESS. THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A WARNING BELL OR VOICE COMMAND ALERTING THE DRIVER THAT THE VEHICLE ISN'T IN PARK. IT CAME TOO LATE FOR MY WIFE TO KNOW HAD SHE OPENED THE DOOR THE CAR WOULD HAVE LOCKED INTO PARK WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF. THERE SHOULD BE A WARNING POSTED TO ALL NEW OWNERS AND A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW TO BEST UTILIZE THE EMERGENCY SYSTEM. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS KILLED BUT MY WIFE BEING TWISTED HEART HER BACK. 2010 FORD FUSION REFERENCE ODI # 10351655 SINCE THE FIRST REGISTERED COMPLAINT OF ROUGH AND ERRATIC SHIFTING (ODI 10351655) MY TRANSMISSION HAS COMPLETELY FAILED. THE FORD SERVICE MANAGER WHERE WE ARE WAITING REPAIR SAID HE HAD NOT SEEN ONE IN SUCH A PHYSICAL STATE, ANYTHING THAT COULD HAVE MELTED WAS MELTED. FORD HAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANMISSION AS IT IS RECOMMENDED FOR RECREATIONAL TOWING.
... THE UNIT HAD BEEN ADJUSTED AND "FIXED" TWICE BEFORE ACCORDING TO FORD SPECIFICATIONS AND THE INFORMATION IN BULLITEN (FORD TSB 09-20-13) WAS FOLLOWED. WHILE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 62 MPH THE TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED AND BECAME TOTALLY DISABLED. IF WE WEREN'T TOWING THIS VEHICLE SECURELY BEHIND A MOTORHOME BUT RATHER DRIVING AT THAT RATE AND THE CARS TRANSMISSION SELF-DESTRUCTS WHAT POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO LIFE AND PROPERTY MIGHT HAVE OCCURRED???? THIS FAULTY TRANSMISSION IS NOT THE ONLY ISOLATED INCIDENT! OTHER DEALERS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR WEEKS FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS TO REBUILD TRANSMISSIONS AS A REMEDY TO THE PROBLEM. I'VE BEEN ASSURED THAT I WILL BE RECEIVING ANOTHER TRANSMISSION (POSSIBLY A REMANUFACTURED UNIT) THAT HAS RECEIVED MODIFICATIONS FOR FLAT/ RECREATIONAL TOWING. WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, I HEARD A LOUD "CLANG" WHICH SOUNDED LIKE IT CAME FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OR UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR. IT SOUNDED LIKE A METAL ROD HIT ANOTHER PIECE OF METAL. AS I WAS ALREADY OUT OF MY SPACE, I PROCEEDED FORWARD, BUT MY CAR LACKED POWER. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND CLAIMED TO BE SURPRISED OF THE FAILURE, WHICH WAS THAT TRANSMISSION FLUID HAD LEAKED INTO THE RADIATOR, AND COOLANT INTO THE TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER QUOTED ME $7000 TO FIX THIS ISSUE. AFTER CALLING AROUND AND FINDING AN AAMCO DEALER WHO EXPLAINED TO ME THIS WELL KNOWN ISSUE, I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF "ONLY" $3800 TO FIX IT. THE PROBLEM, AS DESCRIBED BY THE MECHANIC, WAS A FAULTY DESIGN WHERE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TRAVELS THROUGH THE RADIATOR WITH SOME SORT OF VALVE BOX BETWEEN THEM AND THE HEAT DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THE COOLANT AND TRANSMISSION FLUID NECESSARILY CAUSES THE VALVE BOX TO DECAY CAUSING THE 2 FLUIDS TO MIX. THE RESULT IS A COMPLETELY RUINED RADIATOR, COMPLETELY RUINED VALVE BOX, AND IF NOT TREATED EARLY, A COMPLETELY RUINED TRANSMISSION. OBVIOUSLY, IF I AM DRIVING MY CHILDREN ON VACATION AND WE'RE COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILS, THIS COULD BE VERY TRAGIC! NOW I AM OUT A CAR, FORCED TO OBTAIN A RENTAL CAR, AND STILL NEED TO CORRECTLY FIX MY OWN CAR. WHAT'S MORE, IF I USE THE SAME COMPONENTS THAT NISSAN HAS DESIGNED, I WILL ONLY BE SETTING MYSELF UP FOR FUTURE PROBLEMS. THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE WE PURCHASED IT AS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE AND IT WAS OVER 7 YEARS OLD OUR WARRANTY WAS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. WE CAN FAX THEM OUR PAID RECEIPTS AND PROOF OF TRANSMISSION FLUID MAINTENANCE AND THEY WILL REVIEW IT AND HAVE SOMEONE CALL US IN 2-3 DAYS. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE CIVIC ONLY ON THE ACCORD AND ODYSSEY EVEN THOUGH THROUGH MY RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2001 HONDA CIVIC TRANSMISSION. I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED HONDAS BECAUSE THEY TRULY ARE LOW MAINTENANCE AS LONG AS YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM AND THEY WILL LAST FOREVER.
