MY 2001 HONDA CIVIC LX LOST SPEED RIGHT ON THE CROWDED FREEWAY. I MANAGED TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY AND CAME TO THE STOP. THE GEAR WAS NOT ENGAGED AND THE ENGINE CHECK LINE LIT UP. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. I NOW HAVE LEARNED THAT TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS COMMON ON THIS CAR MODEL BUT THERE IS NO RECALL. OWNER OF A 2003 HONDA ACCORD EX V6, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AT 65,000 MILES HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IT WAS DOWNSHIFTING VIOLENTLY. THE PROBLEM ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR WAS HOT (DRIVING MORE THAN 30-40 MINUTES); I EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM 3 TIMES. I INITIALLY TOOK MY CAR TO KUHN HONDA IN TAMPA TO GET IT CHECKED OUT - THEY SAID IT NEEDED A TRANSMISSION ($3700). THEY ACTED LIKE THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THESE CARS HAVING THIS TYPE OF ISSUE WHICH CONFLICTS WITH ALL OF THE INFO WHICH IS OUT THERE ON THE WEB. I GOT THE SAME STORY AT BRANDON HONDA. THE BRANDON HONDA REP STATED THAT HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE ISSUE & SEEMED SURPRISED THAT IT OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR ONLY HAD 65K MILES ON IT. THE PLACE WHERE I GOT IT FIXED TOLD ME ABOUT A POTENTIAL SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS EXACT SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. AS FOR THE HONDA DEALERSHIPS - THEY APPEAR TO BE SHAMELESS LIARS WHO ARE IGNORING A BIG-TIME SAFETY ISSUE. IF THE CAR CAN DOWN SHIFT TO THE POINT WHERE YOU GO FROM 35 TO 60 MPH TO ABOUT 20 OR 25 MPH YOU RISK CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT. PAID TO DEALER TO REPLACE MOTOR MOUNT, REPLACED STRUTS MYSELF. THE ENGINE STILL THUNKS (TRANSMISSION PAUSES BEFORE CATCHING WITH A JERK FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE, OR DRIVE TO REVERSE. THE JERK IS OCCASIONALLY VIOLENT, LESS PRONOUNCED WHEN ENGINE COLD.) HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED BY DEALER. NO DIFFERENCE. A CAR DRIVEN 50K BY A 70-YEAR OLD EXPERIENCES A BROKEN MOTOR MOUNT, BUM STRUT AND BROKEN TRANSMISSION BEFORE 50K MILES. I PAID ALMOST 30K FOR THIS WHITE ELEPHANT. HAVE ALWAYS OWNED JAPANESE CARS, FIRST NISSAN. OH, DID I MENTION THE OIL LEAK FROM ENGINE OIL SEAL (48K) AND TRUNK LID SLAMMING (40K) BECAUSE THE TWO PISTON ARMS TO HOLD THE LID CAN'T HOLD THE LID UP (SINCE IT SEEMS DAYS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED). DEALER SEEMS TO THINK I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE SERVICE SPECIALIST MENTIONED THAT THIS MODEL HAS AN ISSUE WILL "RUBBER PARTS." I GUESS THE OIL SEAL, THE STRUT SEAL, THE MOTOR MOUNT AND THE TWO TRUNK PISTONS ALL HAVE RUBBER PARTS THAT LEAKED AND/OR DISINTEGRATED. HE MAY HAVE IT ABOUT RIGHT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY SEVERAL MAXIMA SOURCES THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE 2004 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC (RE5F22A) (AW 55-50SN) TRANSMISSION.
