Concern: - Passenger seat not detecting person sitting in it. Airbag not arming. Cause: - The Occupant Classification System (OCS) uses a pressure sensor in the seat bottom to classify whatever is in the front passenger's seat. An improperly seated occupant can "trick" the OCS into possibly classifying the occupant incorrectly. Being improperly seated can include improper use of child restraints,
... improper posture such as leg placement, reclining the seatback too far back, weight of the passenger that is too close to threshold values (movement might effect the narrow weight distribution, gray zone), and using aftermarket cushions and coverings on the seat. If the occupant is a child in a properly secured child-restraint, or if there is no occupant in the seat, the "Passenger Airbag OFF" telltale is expected to be illuminated. For adults, the "Passenger Airbag ON" telltale should be illuminated at vehicle startup. At this time, the occupant protection sensors and modules are functioning as designed.Read more

Our 2017 VW Passat had the clockspring replaced last year under warranty number [XXX] at Barnes Crossing Volkswagen in Tupelo, MS. The airbag stopped working and safety features such as adaptive cruise control were also not available. Not realizing the airbag would NOT deploy in the event of an accident, Volkswagen asked us to drive an hour to have it repaired which was considerably dangerous. As
... of today the clockspring they replaced once again failed with the same associated problems. I am submitting a report due to how dangerous this problem is considering they supposedly fixed the issue however it seems multiple people have reported the issue coming back. The fact the airbag could stop working at anytime due to a defective clockspring is very troublesome and make me worry in the event of an accident if the clockspring will fail thus not allowing the airbag to deploy. My son's 2015 GMC Sierra side impact air bags went off while he was driving. He had no impact. He thought he hit a small pot hole but after driving back on the road, it was recently paved so it was not a pot hole. He guessed it was the edge of the road from the recent paving that he hit. He heard a loud noise like a gun shot. His cabin filled up with smoke and the side impact air bags when off.
... When he took the truck to the GM Dealership, it gave a code for front air bag deployment due to impact. But the side air bags went off and there was no impact. The only damage to the truck is the deployed side airbags and the locked seatbelts. He has a warranty but they kicked it to GM. Warranty stated that if they fixed it, they were worried that it would happen again. We filed a claim with GM. After GM sent three different inspectors out and over 5 weeks later, they denied the claim. They have also not sent the inspection reports as requested. My son did not have this truck for the first three months he owned it because GM could not find the faulty code causing transmission issues. I am worried the air bags deployment will happen again while he is driving at a high speed and cause a serious wreck.Read more
