While car shopping, I found a Ford hybrid listed with ~40,760 miles. Its public history shows a severe, unexplained odometer discrepancy. In September 2022, mileage was ~38,353. By May 2023, it spiked to 392,484. The current title shows 40,760 miles marked with a † (dagger), indicating "mileage discrepancy" or "not actual mileage." The seller is marketing it as a low-mileage vehicle. This misrepresentation poses a serious safety risk. A car with potentially 400,000+ miles of wear is being sold as having only ~40,000. Critical safety components like brakes, suspension, tires, and the hybrid battery system degrade with use. Concealing this extreme wear risks mechanical failure, endangering the buyer and others on the road. The problem is documented in the vehicle history report. I did not purchase the car. This appears to be odometer fraud and title washing, turning a high-mileage vehicle into a deceptively "low-mileage" sale, creating a significant safety hazard.
Backup camera nonfunctional. Will occasionally work or be upside down.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-MAX. The contact stated while driving at approximately 20 MPH with all four windows closed, there was a strong abnormal odor coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact then opened all the windows allowing the odor to release, and the abnormal odor was not as potent. The contact later inspected the vehicle and discovered that the original Volvo battery could be emitting a toxic substance that was entering the vehicle; the battery was original equipment. The contact sustained dizziness and difficulty breathing. Medical attention was not sought. This occurred on several different occasions. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was drivable and was taken to the place of residence. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 131,500.

Recall Number18S24 My car had 3 recalls so I contacted the Legacy Ford dealer in McDonough on [XXX] and made an appointment on [XXX]. When we brought the car, dealer didn't fix the recall above saying they didn't have parts even though we made an appointment over 2 months before. They told us they will let us know when they gets the parts, but it's been over 2 weeks and they don't contact us or respond any of our email. And since we brought our car to dealer, the car stop charging from charging cord. They said they didn't do anything about that and if we want diagnostic, they will charge for $150. I just wanted to fix all of the recall so I bought the car but feel like I just brought it to break my car. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid. The contact stated when the vehicle was started, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a tune-up and to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the axle was loosened, and the bushing was damaged, and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was referred to the NHSTA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
When I first drive it with battery-only mode (about 15 miles), it is quiet. When the engine kicks in, there is a loud whining noise when driving it on the streets or on highways and even on idle. I took it to Ford dealership they said it is the transmission and they can not repair just some parts of it, so it needs a brand new transmission to the tune of $8000. At only 110k miles, I could not drive it past 15 miles of battery range.
Transmission failed at 80,000 miles, replaced at ford dealership, failed again at 105,000 miles, just 2 years after replacement.
System: Electric Power Steering assist module failed on engine start up. Safety: Without power steering it is extremely difficult to steer the car manually which could cause an accident and/or bodily injury. This is a well known problem with the Ford cMax which has created a recall for earlier model years of the cMax (but my 2014 model is not covered under previous recalls). Inspection: Vehicle is at the Ford dealership and has been diagnosed with a failed Power Steering module and is currently under parts replacement. Warnings: On 8 Feb 2014 during engine start, I warning window was displayed that said "Service Power Steering". Same warning window appeared the following morning when car was started. I drove it carefully to the dealership for repair.

Electric power steering assist failed. Started intermittent and cleared on restart of the vehicle. Now complete failure within 2 days of first alert. Spouse was going to drive the vehicle after the vehicle was parked overnight and when she started the vehicle the power steering was inactive and the warnings were displayed and audible. Warning and alarm to "Service Power Steering" is still active and cannot be cleared. We are currently traveling and will not be home for months and must drive the vehicle without power steering assist. My spouse cannot drive the vehicle with this malfunction. We have researched for solutions and have found that this is a common failure for 2014 Ford Cmax Hybrid and there is not a fix other than complete replacement of the Power Steering Motor and Rack Assembly. The safety and health of myself, passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, and even animals is the risk especially if this component(s) fails during active driving and it has according to social media posts and blogs. We have tried to have the vehicle diagnosed by dealerships, but they cannot get the vehicle in for service in any time frame that does not come with significant inconveniences and financial loss. Dealers will not order a part without first diagnosing the problem and cannot schedule an appointment any time soon. I contacted Ford Support directly and they confirmed that steering components have been recalled on 2014 Ford Cmax based on production dates, however, our Cmax was built outside of those parameters. We have logged case number: CAS40982963 with Ford.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-Max. The contact stated that the rear liftgate was opening independently. The contact stated that upon investigating the failure, he noticed that the failure was related to the original key fob of the vehicle. The contact stated that the key fob button that engaged the liftgate was two times press button; however, the key fob would engage the liftgate unintendedly when the key fob button was in contact with any object or surface. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was concerned that the failure could occur while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.
Complete failure of the steering without any warning, Was not able to steer the car. The dealership diagnosed the cause is a failure of the steering Rack Pinion which needed to be replaced. I understand that the 2014 Ford C-Max has a recall on the Steering Rack Pinion, but for some reason my car was not included in this recall. It is obviously it should been included.
Folded down rear seat. Found both seatbelt (receiver) anchor bolts had not been attached to the nuts on the floor pan.
I had a flat tire and I was unable to remove the lug nuts. I was on the freeway creating a hazardous condition. The lug nuts had cover on them and standard lug nuts could not remove the tire. You needed a lug nut that is 1/2 mm larger. Ridiculous!! We had to call a tow truck and take the vehicle to the Ford Service Center to remove the lug nut and tire, which was an unnecessary expense that Ford made money on. What a joke!
Rear-view camera sporadically freezes, turns upside down - will see people walking behind, and then suddenly the image will freeze. This is a major major safety issue and I suspect people may even be killed due to this camera failure. I had numerous situations where the camera would (mid backup) FREEZE the image, resulting in the driver (myself) thinking that nobody was walking behind my vehicle! This needs to be investigated and perhaps the rear-view camera systems recalled on ALL Ford C-maxes as I am seeing many other reports of this happening as well

The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the hatchback door opened independently. The warning light indicating that the hatchback was opened was illuminated. The contact stated that after retrieving the vehicle from the dealer after NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V331000 (Latches/Lock/Linkages) recall repair was performed, the hatchback ajar warning light remained illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the cause of the failure was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V331000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
Ever since we brought the car to a Ford dealership for a recall on the back door latch we have had issues with the battery. We have to jump start it every day.
There is clearly an open recall on my car since June of 2022, I have yet to receive any information from Ford about checking my car to see if it’s affected by this recall. I drive with my 3 year old in this car everyday and I would feel a lot safer if someone was able to look at my vehicle.
Transmission failed at approximately 126,000 miles putting the car in to fail safe mode on the highway
While backing out of the driveway, the brakes failed. In an attempt to stop the car from continuing into on coming traffic, attempted to put the car in park. After moving the gearshift into park, the car continued to roll into on coming traffic. The C-Max struck another another car and continued to roll until it was stopped by a small retaining wall on the opposite side of the street.

The inside door panels become loose. Doors affected are the driver's door and both rear passenger doors. When the panels come loose, it can make the doors impossible to open from the inside and outside door handles. Attempts have been made to correct this issue with new clips to attach the door panels with but the issue keeps happening. These door panels have been an issue since December 2017. It's a safety hazard if you have young children in the rear passenger seats who do not have the strength to push on the doors with either their feet or arms. In the case of an accident/fire they would be trapped.

The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The first recall for the door latches was recall number 16S30 the contact is not sure if she received a recall letter for this recall. The contact stated that the local dealer had said the recall was taken care of. On the second recall, the contact stated that the dealer said that there was no open recall associated with the vehicle VIN. The dealer advised the contact that she would be responsible for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact said that the dealer should honor the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 17,789.
I noticed the car hasn’t honked upon locking it with the key fob for about the last 1,000 miles. Today is the first time I needed to use my horn to warn someone about pulling in front of me while I was also braking. I tried the next 3 miles to get the horn to honk and nothing happened. Once I got home & turned the car off, I could hear there was a clicking noise, but no horn honking sound was produced.

Steering wheel locked up and could not control car. After taking car to repair shop I was informed that the entire power steering rack would have to be replaced. Upon internet research noticed numerous similar complaints of same problem in Ford Cmax and Ford Focus vehicles. Appears to have been a limited recall back in 2014 of several hundred Cmax and Focus cars but Ford gave assurance those were all the cars affected. Not sure if that problem was the same as current problem but there are many reports of power steering failures which can make the cars difficult or impossible to be driven. To repair the car will be approx. $2000 as the entire electronic power steering rack needs replacing. Please see attached PDF for additional information.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the service power steering message was displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 177,842.
The vehicle was entered while parked and locked with the security system active. A panel was removed from the lower left side of the housing beneath the steering wheel. All four windows had been lowered to the maximum extent possible, apparently without breaking them. Debris was strewn across front and rear seats. Spare floor mats stored in the trunk/hatch area (normally out of view due to a cover over the hatch and the rear seat backs) were deposited on the rear seat. Consumer would like to withdrawal the complaint, stated consumer's fault.*JB

The issue is related to steering. My Ford C-Max steering system would become very stiff and gets locked. The warning "Service Power Steering" would pop up and the steering wheel would become inoperable. This has happened a couple instances and creating a huge panic. When this happens the steering cannot be moved. I have to stop the engine and restart after a couple mins. The issue is intermittent and does not give any warnings before this situation occurs creating anxiety and huge risk to drive. I took the car to Ford Dealership at Georgetown Texas. They investigated the issue and reverted that the problem is with Steering Gear and has to be replaced to fix the issue. Upon checking on internet I see Ford had reported out similar issue in Sep 2014 and had tried to address the issue. Details below. https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/2014-ford-focus-c-max-recalled-for-potential-steering-gear-problem.html https://repairpal.com/recall/14V514000 The issue I faced is consistent with the problems highlighted and pose huge risk if this were to happen while driving at high speeds in traffic.
The passenger side rear door plastic panel keeps dislodging from its metal casing, then gets stuck on part of the interior frame, causing the door to not be operational. The plastic overlaps the frame once it is dislodged; the metal part of the door is opening, but the plastic panel holds it back from being able to go past an inch. The door is, essentially, stuck. One must reach in and manually push the plastic panel back into place (sticking fingers in to first dislodge from where it's stuck, then guide it back to where it's supposed to be, then bang on it to get it back in place). There are plastic pegs that are supposed to hold the door panels on, but they don't (and they fall out). There are many message boards, Consumer Reports, and other sites showing this is a common problem for 2013-2014 C Max Hybrid doors. Ford is making consumers pay to replace the panels. They need to change the plastic pegs so that they actually hold, or affix the whole panel is a much more secure way! This is extremely unsafe because we cannot exit the car sometimes, and in an accident that could be dangerous. More importantly, it affects us every day because my children cannot exit our vehicle on the sidewalk side; they must open the driver's side rear door and exit the car into the street, oftentimes into traffic! They need to be able to exit on the SAFE side of the car!! Ford issued a repair for 2013 model cars but not for ours. They know this is a problem. Here is a link to the repair order: https://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/topic/4807-tsb-14-0030-rear-door-trim-panels-loose-built-on-or-before-6282013/ I will put today's date as today was the most recent time my daughter walked into traffic outside school because her door was jammed. But this has happened many, many times over the course of our ownership, and has been getting worse over the last year (if we had driven more often -- like we did pre-pandemic -- I'm sure it would be even worse now).
Sudden loss of power to steering....noted that many others have had this problem.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-Max. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer for tire service and was informed they were unable to rotate the tire due to frozen lug nuts. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford C-MAX. The contact stated that the transfer shaft assembly bearing had failed prematurely which caused an abnormal, grinding sound to come from the transmission while driving at various speeds without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer and had the transmission replaced under warranty. Recently, the contact stated that the same failure recurred with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the dealer where they had test driven the vehicle and confirmed that the same transmission defect had recurred. The contact was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 160,000.
During last trip with car, parked car while shopping. When leaving store car lost steering and warning light came on in dash indicating power steering assist fault. Car was extremely difficult to drive after that. Waiting for appointment with dealer. Had this happened while turning at a busy intersection it could have been a problem. Car has 100,000 miles so I expect some problems, but I think this could be a safety issue.
THERE IS A GRINDING OR RUBBING SOUND EMANATING FROM THE TRANSMISSION WHILE DRIVING, AT ANY SPEED (GENERALLY NOT WHILE STATIONARY BUT SOMETIMES), AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP (METRO MOTORS, ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS) FOUND "TRANSMISSION VARIATOR TO DRIVE CHAIN LOOSE CAUSING NOISE" AND "[N]O INTERNAL SERVICEABLE COMPONENTS" AND RECOMMENDED "[R]EPLACEMENT OF HYBRID CVT TRANSMISSION." THE DEALERSHIP SPECIFICALLY RECOMMENDS REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION PART, JM5Z-7000-ARM, WHICH IS THE SAME PART INDICATED IN THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 20-2219, PUBLISHED ON JUNE 29, 2020, ON THIS SAME ISSUE OF GRINDING/RUBBING NOISE EMANATING FROM TRANSMISSIONS IN 2014 FORD C-MAX (AMONG OTHER VEHICLES). THE TSB FURTHER PROVIDES THE PART IS "ELIGIBLE UNDER PROVISIONS OF NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY," HOWEVER, THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS STATED FORD MOTOR COMPANY DENIED THE CLAIM, AND THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS SAID IT AGREES WITH THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE CLAIM SHOULD BE DENIED. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE (MILEAGE: 86,225 MILES; YEARS: NOT YET 7) IS UNDER AN ACTIVE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY AS THE TERMS HAVE NOT EXPIRED. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IS WILLING TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART, HOWEVER, IT SAYS IT NEEDS WRITTEN CONFIRMATION FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY, WHICH FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS NOT PROVIDED, DESPITE TWO LETTERS OF NOTICE OF DEFECTIVE PART AND MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS WITH THE CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER.
