The transfer case on my 2020 BMW X7 failed and had to be replaced. Turning the vehicle became unstable as the vehicle shuttered badly. BMW confirmed the shuttering and first changed the transfer case fluid. However, it only slightly helped at first but the shuttering came fully back shortly thereafter. The vehicle was inspected by BMW twice. I don’t remember any warning lights on the dash. The shuttering first occurred in 2024.
Oil pum with plastic internals. Repeat hot and cold cycles cause premature failure of the plastic components and cause loss of oil pressure along with the pump grenading itself.
Transfer case broke and struck the engine while driving.
My vehicle is included in BMW Recall Campaign No. 25V 644 – Engine Starter. It has repeatedly failed to start, and on two separate occasions the engine completely stalled while I was stopped at a traffic light. Each time, it took multiple attempts before the car would restart. I have also been stranded in numerous parking lots—during both extreme heat and freezing temperatures—with my children because the vehicle would not start. These incidents were unexpected, unsafe, and entirely consistent with the symptoms described in the recall. We have experienced these problems since purchasing the vehicle, but at the time we had no reason to believe we needed to document every occurrence. Now that BMW has acknowledged a fire risk defect and still has no available remedy, I do not feel safe continuing to operate this car. BMW has even advised owners not to park in a garage due to the potential fire hazard. The first recall was issued in 2024 and did not resolve the issue. The subsequent recall in August 2025 still has no fix. This ongoing situation presents a serious safety risk, and it is unacceptable that it remains unresolved. BMW should be buying these vehicles back and compensating owners for the significant inconvenience and danger this defect has caused.

The check engine light on my 2020 BMW X7 intermittently illuminates and then clears without warning. A BMW technician diagnosed the cause as a malfunctioning active grille shutter assembly at the front of the vehicle. Research shows this is a widespread issue among BMW X5 and X7 models of similar years, with many owners reporting the same failure and expensive repairs. This appears to be a systemic defect, not an isolated incident. Because the grille shutter directly affects engine airflow and cooling, this issue raises reliability and potential safety concerns and should be reviewed for a possible recall.

The contact owns a 2020 BMW X7. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V644000 (Electrical System). The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a left turn, the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic. The contact immediately depressed the brake and attempted to shift into park(P), but the transmission failed to respond as needed. The contact remained in the vehicle with the brake pedal depressed until Roadside Assistance arrived. The contact stated that the Roadside Assistance team held the start button down and the gear selector was shifted into neutral(N) for a second and continued to inadvertently shift back to park(P). The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was unable to properly diagnose the vehicle and referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,600.

I am filing this complaint because the third-row passenger seat in my 2020 BMW X7 has a serious defect that poses an immediate safety risk to children and passengers. The third-row seat malfunctioned while my child was exiting the vehicle. The powered seat began moving unexpectedly and trapped my child’s leg, and we had extreme difficulty getting the seat to release. This is an extremely dangerous failure for any powered seat, especially one that is frequently used by children. This is not normal wear and tear — this is a mechanical and electrical failure of a safety-critical seat system. BMW Fresno has had the vehicle for more than six weeks and cannot fix the problem. BMW North America reviewed the case but denied responsibility and closed it, even though the defect affects a powered safety-critical seat. We still have no repair, no explanation, and no assurance that the seat is safe. I am filing this because the powered seat poses a clear risk of injury, and BMW has not resolved or acknowledged the safety defect. I request that NHTSA investigate the 2020 BMW X7 third-row seat system for potential entrapment hazards. Actions Taken •BMW Fresno inspected the vehicle and kept it for 6+ weeks. •BMW NA conducted a review but has refused to cover cost of repair or acknowledge a defect. •I am seeking NHTSA’s involvement because this is a clear safety problem that BMW has not corrected.

Hello , I would like to report a failed front differential on my vehicle. This issue was diagnosed by an independent BMW shop and is currently being repaired. Mine made it to 69k miles but many others have had theirs failed before 50k miles. My main goal is to bring light to this issue since it seems to be a design flaw. There's also numerous reports for failed transfer cases since they aren't normally serviced by BMW dealers. I've attached both repair invoices.

My front differential has failed and my vehicle has 62,000 miles. There is no recommended service and maintenance schedule for replacing fluids for the front differential so I thinking that this failure is due to an engineering design flaw including no recommended schedule to service the unit. It also seems this component may be too small/weak for the engine output. I has seem this failure reported on many blobs and users groups and seems to be recurring issue that BMW turns a blind side to. They ask why an extended warranty was not purchased and seeing that this is a recurring problem I am asking for a possible recall to force BMW to pay or reimburse others for repairs.
The contact owns a 2020 BMW X7. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the wheels while turning to the right or the left. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that both front control arms needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. Upon investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V678000 (SUSPENSION); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V644000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
The contact works for a company that owns a 2020 BMW X7. The contact stated that while his boss was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The driver was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to a station. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the front trans-axle had disintegrated, causing the shaft to pinch and to create an 8-inch hole at the bottom of the oil pan. The contact stated that a significant amount of oil had leaked from the vehicle. The dealer determined that the transmission and engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that it was a known failure, but the vehicle failure was the most dangerous reported failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that no assistance could be provided because the VIN was not included in a related recall. The failure mileage was approximately 140,218.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that no assistance could be provided because the VIN was not included in a related recall. The failure mileage was approximately 140,218.
The contact owns a 2020 BMW X7. The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the fuel pump module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Transfer case causes vehicle to shake when driving straight or turning from a complete stop or low speeds.
X7 models from year 2020 -2022 have a particular issue at stake which is a manufacture default as it's been reported in many cases in X7 models. I'd like have this Transportation safety to please look into this issue a safety recall as there is a shuddering issue in most x7's when turning right or left at a lower speed which slips the vehicle. I would appreciate it if someone could look into this. Thanks,

The contact owns 2020 BMW X7. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the message "Oil Pump Leak Over - Get the Vehicle Towed to Local Service Dealer" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who could not repair the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where an unknown diagnosis was made. The vehicle was then towed to Baltimore Motor Works, where it was diagnosed that the engine oil pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
I was driving and as I parked on my driveway a message popped up on my dash board saying " " Increased Steering efforts" then I wasn't able to move the steering wheel at all, it feel like it got locked.
I am submitting this complaint based on recurring drivetrain and structural failures in my 2020 BMW X7 (VIN: [XXX] ), which raise serious concerns about reliability and safety. Most recently, the vehicle exhibited shuddering, power loss, and a “neutral-like” disengagement at low speeds. BMW of Pembroke Pines confirmed this through a test drive. However, instead of mechanical replacement, the dealer performed a VTG oil flush and attempted a calibration, which—according to their own documentation—“lost connection.” These signs point to recurring issues with the ATC (transfer case), a known point of failure in several BMW X models. Additional manufacturer defects I’ve experienced include: - Two incidents of cabin water intrusion from separate leaks - A dashboard panel burst shortly after purchase - Rear seat failure requiring a $7,000+ repair BMW North America refuses to provide further assistance despite acknowledging the repair history. This leaves me with a potentially unsafe vehicle, prone to recurring drivetrain failure without a clearly defined remedy. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether the Active Transfer Case and related VTG components in the BMW X7 pose a defect trend requiring formal attention. While my wife was driving our 2020 BMW X7M under normal conditions, the vehicle experienced a catastrophic drivetrain and differential failure. According to the BMW dealership’s service manager, internal drivetrain components became disconnected while the vehicle was in motion. This caused parts to spin freely and damage surrounding systems. Fortunately, no crash occurred, but the technician emphasized that it could have easily led to an accident. There was no external impact, accident, or driver error. Both the BMW dealership and an independent insurance adjuster from GEICO confirmed the failure appeared to be mechanical and internal in nature, possibly due to a manufacturing defect. This failure poses a significant safety risk to occupants and other drivers. Had it occurred at higher speeds or in traffic, the consequences could have been severe. I believe this incident warrants investigation due to potential systemic safety concerns. I am requesting that NHTSA review this failure for manufacturer defects and evaluate whether similar complaints exist regarding drivetrain integrity in BMW X7M models. Supporting documentation, including video evidence, dealership notes, and the insurance report, are available via this link [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Without warning the vehicle came to an abrupt stop while going about 25 mph. I got out and checked and noticed a liquid dripping from underneath the front area of the vehicle. Later determined it was the front transfer case. I really would hate to think what could have happened at higher speeds. Again, no warning at all.

I have noticed that the engine light on my BMW X7 keeps turning on after long rides but then disappears after some time. Upon inspection, I was informed that the issue is related to the active grille shutter, which is located in the front part of the body. While researching to see if others have experienced the same issue, I discovered that many BMW X5 and X7 owners have reported similar problems. It appears to be a common issue with these models. I believe BMW should consider issuing a recall for this problem since it seems to affect a significant number of vehicles in this range.
On August 1st 2024, NHTSA initiated campaign number 24V576000, BMW "Starter Motor May Fail and Overheat". On 10/3 I went into BMW of Bloomfield to get an oil change & address the recall. On 11/23, my car would not start in the middle of traffic. Then on 11/25 I brought in my 2020 X7 to ascertain why the car stopped working and have it fixed. I was told by BMW that the same starter motor stopped working. When I received a call stating that the car was fixed, I informed them that this should be covered by BMW as it was a direct result of the recall that should have been addressed back in October. I'm currently waiting for BMW NA to pay for the failed recalled part, case 07650216.
The car just stopped in the middle of the road and wouldn’t restart. The starter is fried. I didn’t know about the starter recall
The failed component was observed when the Restraint warning icon appeared. There was no accident because the vehicle was taken to the BMW dealership for investigation. There is a warning not to drive because the Restraint system may not work properly. This is a safety issue with no work around to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. After reviewing multiple threads online, it appears that my situation is not uncommon with BMW. I took the vehicle to BMW service and they confirmed there is a fault in the harness that allows the airbag, seat belt and tensioner to not operate properly in the case of a collision. The service advisor admitted they have seen this before and knew how to repair it. The repair is too costly to investigate the harness where the defect in the wiring occurred, so the opt to replace the harness in a parallel manner, which still takes 7 hours and over $2200. The vehicle is only a few months out of warranty and has less than 18,000 total miles. They is no way that the harness experienced normal wear over the years to cause this with such low miles. They attempted to blame the Arizona heat as possible cause, but the vehicle was in Illinois to 2 of the 4 years and while in Arizona, it is parked in my air conditioned garage. Heat is not the cause. This situation is a design defect during assembly or a defective harness at manufacturer. BMW would not accept any responsibility for the issue, which is a safety liability to passengers.

I was driving on the freeway when due to heavy traffic, it was a stop and go. the engine stalled and on re-started on multiple trials. this created a very dangerous situation for an immediate accident as there were vehicles all around me. the engine stalling continued the next day also and I took my vehicle to BMW for servicing and they diagnosed engine starter motor failure which they then replaced and charged me $1,411.44 on June 27, 2024. NHTSA has issued the following recall stating that the starter motor may fail and overheat. NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V576000 Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING [XXX] I called BMW customer service and they told me that my vehicle VIN number was not on the affected vehicles list and hence, they can't do anything and that I should make a complaint with NHTSA. since the issue with NHTSA recall was starter motor on BMW and since I had to pay to get it replaced before NHTSA issued the recall, I strongly feel that BMW sold the car with a faulty starter motor and that they should reimburse me for my out of pocket expenses to get the stater motor replaced. Please advise. thanks, [XXX] , Tel: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving the sunshade for the moonroof opens by itself. I try to close it but it takes about a minute before the button to work and then it does it again. Around 3 times in a row. I did not take it to dealer yet since it is out of warranty. It is very distracting while driving and this happens
The contact owns a 2020 BMW X7. The contact stated that while turning the steering wheel in either direction there was a squeaking sound coming from the steering column. The contact stated that over time the failure had become progressively worse, and the steering had become unstable while driving at highway speeds. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V631000 (Steering). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 74,000.
Emergency call system malfunction error on the dash. The SOS system is not working nor the GPS or any associated ContactedDrive services as the Internet is failed too. This is dangerous to have nonworking SOS in case of an emergency. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON X7 but yet no recall from BMW. The reason of this failure is believed to be faulty installation of shark fin antenna from the BMW factory. Its not sealed properly and water can get inside damaging the TCB unit (corroded or shorted the pcba ) This repair is costing users estimated $3k-$4k if car is just out side of warranty. I believe thousands are affected by this fault that originated at BMW’s factory. I believe in you to do the right thing. Please help. I cannot afford this expensive repair. Expecting - BMW should issue a voluntary recall or at the very least conduct the repair on my vehicle.
On October 21, 2021 we purchased a 2020 BMW X7 from West Houston Land Rover (AutoNation) in Oct 2021. Purchased extended warranties. Within 3 months: Technicians advised replacing nearly new tires. Car smoked on highway after oil change, dismissed as spilled oil. Nov 28, 2023: Car burst into flames 5 minutes after oil change and passed multipoint inspection. Car burned completely to the ground Escaped unharmed but met with rudeness and dismissal from dealership. GM initially promised help, then stopped communication after seeing evidence. Unacceptable: Horrific experience with fire and previous issues. Appalling service and intimidation tactics (threat of lawsuit for sharing story). We demanded immediate action to reimburse our losses and hold the dealership accountable. We will actively share our story to warn others. When I did mention about sharing this experience with consumers the GM said Autonation would sue us for slander if we put any information about this event online. [XXX] Fire started under the hood (engine) [XXX] (owner) was driving a car that was burning it could have exploded or killed her while driving. Also other vehicles were put in danger while driving near a burning flaming car. I do not know if anyone has reproduced this. the following are researching this by investigating: Geico insurance We were told the dealer also filed an insurance claim (not verified as no info was provided) BMW communicated they would also view the car and do an investigation Police were on the scene Fire dept was on the scene and put the fire out No warning lights, no vehicle warning, just burst into flames while driving home from the oil change I have pictures/video/copy of multipoint inspection performed 5 min before the fire started, as well as a receipt for the oil change/multipoint inspection as well as all communications with the GM. The instrument cluster malfunctions - effectively taking the computer dark. This is so widespread they are indefinitely back ordered. Essential car part that is failing too early in lifecycle — still a new car, not a mileage issue Not safe to drive — must have this part Part is on back order indefinitely which is a red flag and makes us think broader systemic issue with part/class of vehicle Need to find a solution that ensures safety of family and recognizes this issue Repeat BMW customer and want to continue to be so but feeling very uncomfortable and vulnerable given the above

Engine shut off after a brief warning message on the dash while highway driving. I don't remember the exact words but it was a "drivetrain" problem. After the the message came on the car sputtered 2 or 3 times and then the engine shut down without warning. The car would not re-start. The car was stuck in the middle of the highway dead in it's track, in real danger of being rear ended by oncoming traffic driving at highway speeds. The car was towed to a nearby dealership that said the fuel pump failed. The odometer on the car was at 48,000, well below the typical mileage associated with fuel pump failure.
